The airline industry is a multi billion dollar industry that is growing every year. Many different companies are involved in the industry from the people that produce the food for your journey to the engine manufacturer that produce the engines to power the plane. Most people don’t realise that huge savings can be made when purchasing airline/travel tickets.

How do I get cheap tickets?
1. Research, research, research. This is good technique in obtaining anything cheaply. I’m sure you’ve got that mother that goes to the mall/shopping centre and walks every inch of the place, and then around again comparing prices. Well, this actually works. As seen in point 2, the internet allows you to do this from the comfort of your own home/office computer.
2. A good place to start when trying to get cheap plane tickets is to book and make your reservations as soon as humanely possible. Once you’ve made up your mind to book that week in Hawaii, get it booked. Airlines and travel agents will be willing to give you some serious discounts for booking early. Airlines generally tend to give you discounts at least 21 days in advance with the best rates including Saturday night stays and travelling in the week.
3. The internet is fast becoming the quickest and most convenient method for searching for anything you could possibly imagine. No more is this true than comparing the many different airlines available to you. The big boys fight and play hard when trying to get the dollars or pounds in your wallet. They are even willing to give you the occasional upgrade if you ask nicely (though few and far between).
4. Try to be as flexible as you can. If you can fly when others won’t, you’ll undoubtedly get a better deal. Not many people can fly on a Wednesday or Thursday. Who wants to fly on a Saturday afternoon? (You want to get to your destination by the weekend to enjoy your trip to the fullest. A lot people hate to get up early in the morning to catch that flight. Why not ask for the earliest flight possible. If you’re a bit tight like me, you’ll sacrifice a few zzzz’s to save you money. Though, if you love your sleep, better off forgetting this option.
5. I know it’s hard, especially if you’ve got kids, but travelling off season can sometimes save you hundreds and even thousands if there’s a large group of you. Airlines are at less capacity during these times and will always want to get bums on seats whatever it takes.
6. Try and book your holiday as a package.
This not only keeps things nice and simple, you may even be able to save by booking the airline tickets together with your hotel room or rental car.
7. Be a little cheeky. Cheeky? You ask. To be honest, simply by asking the agent if that’s the best price they can give sometimes forces them to find a cheaper route or alternative package.
8. “UPGRADE”, the famous one used by the professional traveller and movie star. 9 times out of ten you’ll ask and get turned down almost instantly, though, you’ll get the odd occasion where the clerk behind the desk will upgrade you with little or no fuss.
9. Coupons and crazy offers. Sometimes you’ll get great deals and offers from Sunday supplements to the free magazine in your local grocery store. Often, package holidays and airlines will promote different offers by way of coupons and competitions. If you’ve got the time to fill these out and play the waiting game. This is ideal for you.
10. Book together. Maybe you’re going on a lads weekend or a hen party weekend. So many times people seem to book their flight and accommodation separately and they don’t realise the possibility in obtaining a sizable discount by bulk booking.
These tips are just the beginning. By putting just some of these into action will give you a little edge on the airlines.
